On Being Present

If, then, my awareness of the past and future makes me less aware of the present, I must begin to wonder whether I am actually living in the real world.

― Alan Watts

Reflecting on my childhood, I remember struggling with severe anxiety—missing school days, avoiding sleepovers, and feeling overwhelmed by fears that seemed larger than life. Over time, I managed to move past this phase, but today, I see many experiencing similar struggles, intensified by the relentless barrage of social media and 24/7 news cycles.

These digital platforms often inundate us with negativity beyond our control, diverting our attention from the present moment and trapping us in cycles of worry. It’s a challenge to remain grounded when our minds are constantly pulled elsewhere.

To break free from this, we must consciously choose to disconnect from digital distractions and refocus on the here and now. Ask yourself: What am I feeling at this moment? What do I see around me? What task is before me right now? By centering our attention on the present, we can break free from the anxieties of the past and uncertainties of the future.

In a world designed to divert our focus, presence is a battle. We won’t always win, but we have to keep fighting to reclaim our peace of mind.
